Want to share with you these links I found on Jess' blog...
More pet ridiculosity... (feel free to borrow that word)
And a chilling account of killing the unborn.
We would have been outraged if this woman wrote about killing a dog, yet we feel it's not our place to comment when she has her twins shot through their hearts to avoid having to miss speaking engagements and buy tubs of mayonnaise at Costco.
It sickens me to think of it...

You know, if I had sheep to herd, or a garden full of gophers, or lived alone as a single woman...I would probably get a dog. But, living in a suburban town as I do, with so many young children in my care, the dog would require far, far more investment from me than it would return. KWIM? It would serve no useful purpose and would only drain my limited resources.
Dogs are kinda smelly, too. Nice and loyal and fun to toss a ball to, but smelly and slobbery and not terribly smart.
The cat, on the other hand, is very low-maintenance. She's been with us for 10 years. However, if she starts having serious health problems, much as we love her, we will not be spending huge amounts of money on vet bills. She will probably be put out of her misery.
We've had lots of small-animal pets and we do enjoy animals. However, I really do not understand morbid sentimentality so many display over them. I think "ridiculosity" is a great term for it. :)
