Back to school...

After weeks of procrastination, we started school again yesterday.

We are memorizing Bible verses with Abeka's ABC scripture memory cards. They use the same verses that are listed at momof9'splace. We are on the letter "D". I am hoping this will also help Jazzy learn her ABC's.

We read the story of Cain and Abel from Bible Stories to Read and colored the picture in the corresponding coloring book. The story was fitting as we are working to squash sibling rivalry this week.

Tam, from Tid Bits of Our Life, has many children (somewhere in the teens) and says they do not bicker because she simply does not allow it. If she can have a peaceful home with umpteen children, I should be able to have peace with three. We are working on it this week and I will let you know how it goes.

I have a topical reference guide called For Instruction in Righteousness that gives scripture references relating to specific issues, so we'll study verses related to arguing/contention this week.

We'll also continue to work on handwriting. Jazzy finished up Kumon's My First Book of Tracing yesterday. I also used this with Drew when he was younger and they both loved it. (We liked My First Book of Cutting and Amazing Mazes as well.) Today I'm going to start Jazzy on some pages I printed from Donna Young. Drew is using A Reason for Handwriting which teaches children to write using scripture.

I did not start homeschooling for religious reasons, but I love being able to infuse Bible and Christian values into everything we do. Our children take in negativity through TV, movies, video games and life in general, and it will only get worse as they grow older. We have to put as much good as we can into them while we have the time. (Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16).

That is as far as we got yesterday and probably as far as we'll get today since we're visiting my Aunt in the country. If we do nothing other than Bible, then I figure we've done enough for the day. Like my mom said, everything we need to know is in there.
