I am a type A, color inside the lines, don't mix playdoh colors kinda of gal. But my kids are crafty kids, so I'm working on it. And though I've had to take many deep relaxing breaths and restrain myself from telling the kids not to mix blue and orange paint thus making brown, we're having fun. (Must keep reminding myself that FUN is the goal.)
It helps to put the kids in dad's old t-shirts and lay a big tarp on the floor to reduce the mess. And sometimes we paint outside. I have a book called Preschool Art that is full of open art activities that we'll work from this year. And I also found some neat ideas at http://www.crayola.com/.

Here are the kids with their treasure chests. We had to measure and cut the pieces out of cardboard, glue the box together, then paint it and trim with yellow construction paper. It was a lot of work but the kids had fun and Drew got to work on his measuring skills.
